Research & Grey Literature

OpenAlex API

API

OpenAlex is a nonprofit, open index of scholarly works, authors, sources, institutions, topics and more, served as a REST API that returns JSON. Each entity type is an endpoint (/works, /authors, /sources and others) that can be listed, filtered, searched, sorted, grouped into counts and paged, and OpenAlex says "all data is CC0". Basic queries work with no key; a free key raises the daily budget 10x.

Free (no key for basic use; free key with $1 of usage a day); paid prepaid usage and annual plans above thatOpenAlex says its default curated core corpus has "300M+ works"; an opt-in expansion (corpus=all, mostly datasets and repository records) adds roughly 60% more works. The whole database can also be downloaded as a snapshot "refreshed every quarter"; the daily snapshot and the API's since-a-date sync filters are paid Member+ and Partner services. Publication delay: Not stated.

Crossref REST API

API

Crossref's public REST API exposes the scholarly metadata that Crossref members and trusted sources deposit: bibliographic records plus funding data, licence information, post-publication updates, ORCID and ROR IDs and, for some records, abstracts. Works, journals, members, funders, prefixes, types and licences can be searched, filtered, faceted or sampled, with results in JSON; no sign-up is required.

Free (no sign-up)The metadata is deposited directly by Crossref's members, who publish the content each record represents, and is complemented by trusted sources such as Retraction Watch. Record types (journal-article, monograph, grant and others) are listed at the /types endpoint. Publication delay: Not stated.

arXiv API

API

arXiv's public API returns search results and metadata for arXiv e-prints as an Atom XML feed: titles, abstracts, authors, categories, identifiers, dates and links to each abstract page and PDF. API

Zenodo, the open repository hosted by CERN, has a REST API for searching its published records of any resource type, such as publications, reports, datasets and software, and returning their metadata and file links in JSON, plus OAI-PMH harvesting. Public records search works without a key under Zenodo's published guest limits (60 requests a minute and 2,000 an hour; search endpoints 30 a minute); a free Zenodo account and access token give higher limits and are needed for authenticated and deposit operations. Zenodo's developer docs also say broadly that "All API access requires an access token".
