Coverage
The July 2026 release covers 14,674 units in 111 countries, including operating coal units of at least 30 MW, proposals since 2010 and retirements since 2000. The tracker is updated twice yearly, around January and July; plants under 30 MW are excluded.
Verdict
This is a global unit-level capacity signal for coal fleet additions, construction pipelines, ownership and retirement schedules. It can support power-supply, fuel-demand, stranded-asset and emissions-exposure features. Proposed-project coordinates can be approximate, status can change between the twice-yearly releases, and calculated emissions rely on capacity, combustion, coal-type and country capacity-factor assumptions. Units below 30 MW are absent, and reuse requires CC BY 4.0 attribution.
