JRC AGRI4CAST Resources Portal
JRC AGRI4CAST Resources Portal
The JRC AGRI4CAST portal publishes MARS crop-monitoring resources including gridded agro-meteorology, vegetation indicators, crop areas, subnational crop statistics, irrigation and crop calendars. Public resources include tailored CSV or NetCDF exports and static ZIP files containing shapefiles or PDFs; no account is needed for the checked static file.
Required Attribution:
Give appropriate credit to the European Union/JRC and indicate changes, subject to any resource-specific notice.
Coverage
The checked catalog contains nine open resources focused on the European Union and neighbouring countries. Individual histories vary: daily gridded agro-meteorology starts in 1980, while the checked irrigated-crops shapefile represents 2010 and was published in 2022.
Verdict
A geospatial crop-condition and production-context signal for EU agricultural regions, with weather, vegetation, area, yield and irrigation layers. Coverage, resolution, period and refresh cadence differ by resource; several products stop at the last completed year or a fixed reference year. Tailored downloads use a portal session and can change schema or delivery flow. Static shapefiles can be large after decompression and require geospatial handling if geometry is needed.

Use in your agent
Load JRC irrigated-crop attributes into pandas and Parquet. Checked against the provider's documentation on Nov 1, 2026.
Access
- The checked irrigated-crops ZIP downloaded without an account or key.
- Tailored portal resources use an automatically issued session; this example avoids that flow and reads a direct static file.
Request
curl -O 'https://agri4cast.jrc.ec.europa.eu/download/dataportal_resources/static_data/dist_irr_crop_eu.zip'Format
ZIP shapefile. The example reads the DBF attribute table into pandas; the archive also contains SHP, SHX, PRJ and index files for geometry-aware tools.
Load into pandas and Parquet
Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.

Limits
- Rate limit: Not stated.
- The checked ZIP is about 8.1 MB and expands to about 91.2 MB.
- The example stores attributes only; retain SHP and SHX files for geometry.
Quirks
- Resource periods and update schedules differ; inspect each resource descriptor before combining files.
- The custom DBF reader handles numeric and text attributes but intentionally does not parse geometry.
- Tailored downloads use portal-generated requests, while some static resources expose direct file URLs.
Terms and attribution
- The portal describes datasets as freely available for download and reuse.
- EU-owned content is CC BY 4.0 unless a resource states otherwise; credit the EU/JRC and indicate changes.
