EU JRC INFORM Risk Index

The EU JRC-led INFORM Risk Index publishes country-level humanitarian-crisis and disaster-risk scores through keyless JSON endpoints and downloadable XLSX workbooks. Records carry ISO3, year, indicator ID and name, score, workflow and methodology identifiers, while the model covers hazard and exposure, vulnerability and lack of coping capacity; no key is needed.

Coverage

The checked trends endpoint returned 7,640 scores for 191 ISO3 codes, four indicators and years 2016-2025. The results page also offers a 2026 index, a mid-2026 index and a 2017-2026 trend workbook; the latest index workbook shown was 2.4 MB and the trend workbook 18.8 MB.

Verdict

A comparable country-risk signal for screening exposure to humanitarian crises and disasters and for adding a structural-risk feature to country or supply-chain models. It is a composite index rather than an event feed, and input revisions or methodology changes can move scores without a new crisis. Country-level results can hide subnational variation, while some underlying indicators change more slowly than others. Store the year, workflow and methodology IDs and do not mix editions without checking their definitions.

Load into pandas and Parquet

Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.

python
"""INFORM country risk trends -> pandas -> Parquet. No key."""
import requests
import pandas as pd

URL = "https://drmkc.jrc.ec.europa.eu/inform-index/api/informapi/countries/trends"
r = requests.get(URL, params={"workflowid": 0}, timeout=120)
r.raise_for_status()
df = pd.DataFrame(r.json())
df.to_parquet("inform_risk_trends.parquet", index=False)
print(len(df), "scores", df["Iso3"].nunique(), "ISO3 codes",
      int(df["GNAYear"].min()), "to", int(df["GNAYear"].max()),
      df["IndicatorId"].nunique(), "indicators")

Run by us on 2026-11-01 (python 3.13.5 | pandas 3.1.0 | pyarrow 26.0.0 | requests 2.34.2). Result: 7640 scores 191 ISO3 codes 2016 to 2025 4 indicators

Limits

  • Rate limit: Not stated.
  • The checked JSON response contained 7,640 rows and was about 1.7 MB.
  • The results page listed a 2.4 MB 2026 workbook and an 18.8 MB 2017-2026 trend workbook.

Quirks

  • The trends endpoint's latest returned score year was 2025 even though the download page offered 2026 workbooks.
  • Treat GNAYear as the score edition year and preserve WorkflowId and MethodologyId for reproducibility.
  • CountryName was empty in the checked response; join Iso3 to a separate country reference when labels are required.
