NHTSA vPIC Vehicle API
NHTSA vPIC Vehicle API
NHTSA's vPIC API decodes VINs and returns vehicle, make, model, manufacturer, WMI, equipment and variable data as JSON, CSV or XML. Results contain method-specific identifiers, names, values and attributes; no key or registration is needed.
Coverage
The service covers vehicles reported by manufacturers for importation, use or sale in the United States and is intended for model years 1981 forward. NHTSA reports much stronger decode coverage from model year 1995 forward than for 1980-1994, and no pre-1980 data. Batch VIN decoding accepts at most 50 VINs; several list methods paginate at 100 or 1,000 records.
Verdict
A structured identity and specification signal for resolving a VIN or normalizing vehicle makes, models and manufacturers. It is useful for vehicle-linked assets, recalls research and supply-chain entity matching, but it reflects manufacturer submissions rather than registration or movement data. Older VINs have documented coverage gaps, and decoded values can be corrected after publication. Automated traffic control applies even though the FAQ states no daily action limit.

- This example requests Honda models for model year 2026 as JSON.
Request
curl 'https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/api/vehicles/GetModelsForMakeYear/make/honda/modelyear/2026?format=json'Format
JSON with Count, Message, SearchCriteria and Results; each result has Make_ID, Make_Name, Model_ID and Model_Name.
Load into pandas and Parquet
Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.
"""NHTSA vPIC Honda models for model year 2026 -> pandas -> Parquet. No key."""
import requests
import pandas as pd
URL = "https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/api/vehicles/GetModelsForMakeYear/make/honda/modelyear/2026?format=json"
r = requests.get(URL, timeout=60)
r.raise_for_status()
payload = r.json()
df = pd.DataFrame(payload["Results"])
df.to_parquet("nhtsa_vpic_honda_2026.parquet", index=False)
print(len(df), "models", ", ".join(sorted(df["Model_Name"].dropna().unique())[:5]))Run by us on 2026-11-01 (python 3.13.5 | pandas 3.1.0 | pyarrow 26.0.0 | requests 2.34.2). Result: 70 models ADV160, Accord, Africa Twin, Africa Twin Adventure Sports, CB1000F
