Ookla Speedtest Open Data
Ookla Speedtest Open Data
Ookla publishes quarterly fixed and mobile network-performance aggregates in zoom-16 geographic tiles as Apache Parquet and zipped Shapefiles. Fields include average download and upload speed, latency, test and device counts, quadkey and geometry; no key is needed.

Coverage
The files cover fixed and mobile measurements worldwide from Q1 2019 through the most recently completed published quarter, with quarterly additions. Only tests with GPS-quality location accuracy are included, regional availability can change, and historical aggregates can be regenerated for data-subject requests.
Verdict
A spatial alternative-data signal for comparing broadband performance, infrastructure quality and connectivity trends across markets. Each row is a quarterly aggregate rather than a live reading, so it cannot identify short outages and arrives after quarter end. Speedtest users and GPS-quality filtering create sampling effects, and some loaded-latency fields are sparse. Regional availability and reaggregation can change results, while the non-commercial licence limits deployment in commercial agents.

Use in your agent
Load an Ookla quarterly fixed-network file into pandas and Parquet. Checked against the provider's documentation on Nov 1, 2026.
Access
- No account, key or signed AWS request is needed for the public S3 file.
- The data licence permits non-commercial use and requires attribution and ShareAlike distribution.
Request
curl -O 'https://ookla-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/parquet/performance/type=fixed/year=2019/quarter=1/2019-01-01_performance_fixed_tiles.parquet'Format
Apache Parquet rows for zoom-16 tiles with WKT geometry, speed and latency averages, test and device counts, quadkey and centroid coordinates where available.
Load into pandas and Parquet
Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.

Limits
- Rate limit: Not stated.
- Files are quarterly aggregates and individual Parquet files can be hundreds of megabytes.
- The licence is non-commercial and ShareAlike.
Quirks
- The tile field is WKT in EPSG:4326 even though the aggregation grid is based on zoom-16 Web Mercator tiles.
- avg_lat_down_ms and avg_lat_up_ms begin with Q4 2022, are Parquet-only and can be null.
- Historical aggregates can change after reaggregation, and regional availability is subject to change.
Terms and attribution
- The data is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 for non-commercial reuse.
- Use the provider's suggested attribution and retain ShareAlike terms on adapted data.
