HELCOM AIS shipping density maps
HELCOM AIS shipping density maps
HELCOM publishes annual Baltic Sea shipping-density maps derived from the HELCOM AIS network (AIS signals received by Baltic Sea states since 2005). Density is the number of IMO-registered ship trips crossing each 1×1 km EEA/INSPIRE grid cell, produced for all ships and by IMO ship category.

Coverage
Baltic Sea annual density grids for 2006–2024 (metadata record checked 2026-11-05). HELCOM Map and Data Service shows 2020–2024 ship-type maps plus total annual density from 2006–2024; the downloadable zip contains the full 2006–2024 set. Update cadence is yearly. Intra-year delay before publication is Not stated.
Verdict
This is a Baltic vessel-corridor intensity signal for agents watching North European shipping lanes, shadow-fleet approaches to Baltic ports and seasonal traffic shifts — useful next to Danish AIS history and BarentsWatch live AIS. HELCOM's data policy §5.3 sets spatial products to a CC-BY licence and the density metadata says the data are free for public use when HELCOM is cited as the source.

Limits
- Not stated numeric rate limit.
- Full density zip size is large; this skill only probes metadata.
Quirks
- Density is trip crossings per 1×1 km cell from HELCOM AIS, not raw AIS messages.
- Cite HELCOM under CC-BY / data policy §5.3.
Terms and attribution
- CC-BY with HELCOM attribution per HELCOM data policy §5.3 and density metadata use constraints.
