GLEIF LEI Golden Copy and API
GLEIF LEI Golden Copy and API
GLEIF publishes worldwide Legal Entity Identifier records and relationship data through Golden Copy XML, CSV and JSON files plus a JSON API. Records cover LEI, legal name, addresses, entity and registration status, issuer, dates, parent relationships and mapped identifiers; no key is needed.
Coverage
The Global LEI Index covers legal entities issued an LEI worldwide and retains all LEIs ever published in a Golden Copy. GLEIF publishes Golden Copy files three times daily at 02:00, 10:00 and 18:00 UTC, with 8-hour, 24-hour, 7-day and 31-day delta files; the API is based on the Golden Copy.
Verdict
This is a reference-data signal for resolving organizations, checking LEI registration state and mapping ownership or linked identifiers. An LEI identifies a registered legal entity, but source information comes from third-party applications and can be stale, incomplete or wrong. Golden Copy files are the bulk snapshot; the API supports filtered discovery but is limited to 60 requests per minute per user. Keep publication and registration-update timestamps because entity details and status can change.

Use in your agent
Load current Canadian GLEIF LEI records into pandas and Parquet. Checked against the provider's documentation on Nov 1, 2026.
Access
- No account or key. The public API returns JSON over HTTPS.
- Golden Copy and delta files provide bulk XML, CSV and JSON alternatives.
Request
curl 'https://api.gleif.org/api/v1/lei-records?filter%5Bentity.legalAddress.country%5D=CA&page%5Bsize%5D=100'Format
JSON:API records with LEI, entity names and addresses, jurisdiction and category, registration status and dates, issuer, validation details, relationships and response metadata including Golden Copy publication time and pagination.

Limits
- Rate limit: 60 requests per minute per user.
- Search responses are paginated; follow response pagination metadata and links for further pages.
- Use Golden Copy and delta files instead of paging the API for bulk synchronization.
Quirks
- The response follows JSON:API: record fields are nested under data[].attributes, while related links are separate.
- Registration status and entity status are different fields; preserve both.
- The terms state that reference data originates in third-party applications and may not be accurate, current or unique for an entity.
Terms and attribution

- The access service is free, but GLEIF may suspend or modify it.
