USDA FAS Production, Supply & Distribution
USDA FAS Production, Supply & Distribution
USDA FAS official production, supply and distribution forecasts for key agricultural commodities, returned by a JSON or XML API. Records are organized by commodity, country or world aggregate, market year, forecast attribute, unit and value; a free api.data.gov key is required.

Coverage
The database covers applicable countries and world aggregates, with most commodity series beginning in 1960. FAS says the data are reviewed and updated monthly; the API supports one commodity and market year per forecast-data route, with country or world selectors.
Verdict
PSD provides a monthly global supply-and-demand signal for commodity production, consumption, stocks and trade forecasts. Values are forecasts rather than final observations and can be revised across multiple market years in one release. Commodity, attribute and unit labels live in separate lookup endpoints, so code-to-label joins are required. Release-date endpoints help incremental pipelines detect which commodity series changed.

Limits
- Rate limit: Not stated.
- Forecast-data routes select one commodity and market year at a time.
- Use the commodity data-release-date route to identify revisions before reloading history.
Quirks
- Country, commodity, attribute and unit labels come from separate lookup endpoints.
- Market years differ by commodity and country and should not be treated as calendar years without metadata.
- Forecasts for several prior years may be revised in a new monthly release.
