NSIDC Sea Ice Index (G02135)

NSIDC Sea Ice Index (G02135)

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Sea Ice Index (G02135) provides consistent Arctic and Antarctic sea-ice extent and concentration images and data values (including GeoTIFF and ASCII products) from November 1978 to the present. Files are published on an HTTPS data root under NOAA@NSIDC; citation of the dataset is required as a condition of use.

Required Attribution:

Cite Sea Ice Index (G02135, Version 4) per NSIDC citation policies / DOI 10.7265/a98x-0f50

Coverage

Daily and monthly sea-ice extent/concentration products from Nov 1978 to present for north and south hemispheres. The HTTPS data root (noaadata.apps.nsidc.org/NOAA/G02135/) listed north/, south/ and seaice_analysis/ directories when checked on 2026-11-05, with seaice_analysis stamped that same day. The current product series is Version 4.

Verdict

This is a benchmark polar sea-ice signal for Arctic route accessibility and seasonal ice risk on high-latitude shipping lanes, useful next to Copernicus Marine and Canadian ice products. NSIDC requires a formal data citation for use; Signal Lab points agents at the official HTTPS data root and landing DOI rather than hosting copies.

Access

  • No account or key. Files are on the NOAA@NSIDC HTTPS data root.
  • Cite Sea Ice Index (G02135, Version 4) per NSIDC citation policy / DOI 10.7265/a98x-0f50 when you use the data.

Request

bash
curl -sL 'https://noaadata.apps.nsidc.org/NOAA/G02135/'

Format

Directory listing of north/, south/ and seaice_analysis/ trees with daily/monthly ASCII, GeoTIFF and related ice-index products.

Load into pandas and Parquet

Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.

python
"""NSIDC Sea Ice Index: list HTTPS root into pandas -> Parquet. Citation required."""
import requests
import pandas as pd
from html.parser import HTMLParser

class LinkParser(HTMLParser):
    def __init__(self):
        super().__init__()
        self.hrefs = []
    def handle_starttag(self, tag, attrs):
        if tag == "a":
            href = dict(attrs).get("href")
            if href:
                self.hrefs.append(href)

ROOT = "https://noaadata.apps.nsidc.org/NOAA/G02135/"
r = requests.get(ROOT, timeout=60)
r.raise_for_status()
p = LinkParser()
p.feed(r.text)
hrefs = [h for h in p.hrefs if h and not h.startswith("?")]
df = pd.DataFrame({"href": hrefs})
df.to_parquet("nsidc_g02135_root_listing.parquet", index=False)
print(len(df), "entries;", hrefs[:5])

Run by us on 2026-11-05 (python 3 | requests). Result: HTTPS root listed north/, south/, seaice_analysis/ on 2026-11-05; seaice_analysis stamped same day.

Limits

  • Citation required for use.
  • Prefer monthly products for long-term trend work per NSIDC guidance on the product pages.

Quirks

  • nsidc.org landing pages timed out from some hosts on 2026-11-05 while the noaadata HTTPS root answered.

Terms and attribution

  • Free access with required citation; see nsidc.org data-use-and-copyright and the G02135 Version 4 citation.
