# Load USGS 2026 import-reliance data into pandas and Parquet

Source entry: https://signal-lab-jet.vercel.app/datasets/usgs-mineral-commodity-summaries-2026
Provider: https://www.usgs.gov/data/mineral-commodity-summaries-2026-data-release
Checked against the provider's documentation: 2026-11-01

## Access
- No account or key. ScienceBase exposes individual CSV downloads and JSON catalogue metadata.

## Request
```bash
curl 'https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/file/get/696a75d5d4be0228872d3bf8?f=__disk__90%2F85%2Fd4%2F9085d4823bf86edb0f54dd63eb8023c11d097c61'
```

## Format
CSV rows by commodity with 2025 net import reliance, major import sources for 2021-2024 and notes.

## Load into pandas and Parquet
Needs Python 3 with requests, pandas and pyarrow.
```python
"""USGS MCS 2026 net-import-reliance table -> pandas -> Parquet."""
import io
import requests
import pandas as pd
URL = "https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/file/get/696a75d5d4be0228872d3bf8?f=__disk__90%2F85%2Fd4%2F9085d4823bf86edb0f54dd63eb8023c11d097c61"
r = requests.get(URL, timeout=60)
r.raise_for_status()
df = pd.read_csv(io.BytesIO(r.content))
df.to_parquet("usgs_mcs2026_import_reliance.parquet", index=False)
potash = df.loc[df["Commodity"].eq("POTASH")].iloc[0]
print(len(df), "commodities; POTASH net import reliance",
      f'{float(potash["Net_Import_Reliance_pct_2025"]):.0f}%; sources',
      potash["Major_Import_Sources_2021_24"])
```
Run by us on 2026-11-01 (python 3.13.5 | pandas 3.1.0 | pyarrow 26.0.0 | requests 2.34.2). Result: 68 commodities; POTASH net import reliance 92%; sources Canada, Russia, Israel

## Limits
- Rate limit: Not stated.
- This is an annual release, not a live feed.
- The tested table has 68 commodity rows; the broader release covers more than 90 commodities across separate tables.

## Quirks
- The release is split across entity tables; join only after checking each table's commodity names, units and year fields.
- Major import sources cover 2021-2024 while net import reliance is a 2025 estimate in the tested file.
- Keep notes because they qualify country groupings and commodity definitions.

## Terms and attribution
- USGS-authored data and information are public-domain material; marked third-party content is excluded.
- USGS asks users to provide proper credit.
